Comic book ads from the 1940s

Hi, I'm Bersercules the Berserk Herc (which I'm sure you didn't know) and today I'm reviewing, exactly what the title of this post says I am.

Here's my proof:

  2. The print and art quality of comics have come a long way since then but I really love the old style of illustration.

  3. Great work Captain Reviewer, what the hell is a tootsie roll, do they still make these?

    1. Yep they still make them. They're quite popular in Canada still, I use to get them all the time at halloween back in the 90s! There long brown chewy candy that comes in a dark brown wrapper.

  4. You know there is someone creepier than superheroes that hang out with kids. Captain Birdseye lived on an island alone with them. Should you not have a B on your shirt for Bersercules? You could totally become Seaman Reviewer. You know, why ARE they making the fat kid run? And calling him fat? Way to go kids, eat candy and mock fat kids. I wonder if anyone realized the correlation between candy and fat kids. "Let's call him Quickie, as a tribute." Epic line. Huh, that's how you spell "johoshaphat". There were some really crazy comic book adverts back then, and things just got worse really. Comic books can be counted on for some of the best adverts ever.

    1. WOW THAT WAS CREEPY!!! Captain Birdseye will give me nightmares for weeks! Saw one commersial with him on a boat full of kids!

Back then they might not have realised candy=fat. Some of the ads mention chocolate bars as an excellent source of energy and nutrition.

    2. Well they technically are an excellent source of energy. They also contain a lot of protein I think. But they're mostly a dangerous source of fat.

  5. ohhh Golden Age comics and their campy ads...

they may seem strange/cheesy to us modern folk but I'm sure they were highly effective back in the day. Now excuse me, I suddenly have the urge to eat some Tootsie Rolls.

  6. From now on I will address you only as Captain Reviewer!

"They crammed him in the corner like he crams food in his mouth" that was so funny!

My how times have changed here in the States LMAO!!! That wouldn't make it past the poor illustrator's supervisor's desk before the guy got fired! Calling the kid Fatso, classic!

And the guy named quickie, your whole narration had me laughing so hard my daughter, who thankfully doesn't understand this humor just yet, was looking at me like I had gone crazy.

This one needs a special place in your Hall of Fame, Bersercules!!

    1. I'm glad you enjoyed it! Your praise of this episode has put a big smile on my face!

I'll have to put a picture of this one on the side of my blog with a link to it so others can find it easily.

  8. Oh RC cola long before coke and pepsi crushed them in sales. I guess showing off products in comics didnt work out

    1. I guess thats how coke and pepsi thrived! They did the opposite of RC!

  10. Hunting a bear with a sniper rifle equipped with a variable scope just doesn't seem fair. Shame on you, Captain Tootsie.

And, thank God for demon Satan, the king of tying knots, or that downtrodden window washer would have been done for.

    1. I was hoping he'd go after the bear with a knife! Now that would have been a fun comic to read! Guy who hangs out with kids mauled by bear!

I guess Satan loves the working man.

  11. I wish you would have done more on the "Old Nick: In the Nick of Time" comic. One can only have mixed feelings about such a character. On one hand, it is kind of high minded to have some sort of quasi-super hero who is a senior citizen. Not since "Matlock" was cancelled have the aged had such a compelling role model to look up to. On the other hand, calling him "Old" Nick is kind of demeaning. So I guess it's a wash. Anywho, I think i'm going to log in on "jimmyfungus" at youtube and re-watch the video and comment there too. The video went by sooo fast. Miss a little, miss a lot.

    1. There wasn't too much to say about Old Nick, sure there was a few odd things about the comic, besides him not having anthing to do with the chocolate bar beyond the same name, but not enough to really focus on it. And to make my reviews easier to edit (cause my computer slows down the longer the video I'm making is) I try to keep my reviews short and only focus on the oddest/silliest things!

What about Jessica Fletcher from Murder, She Wrote? Or better yet, what about the woman on Golden Girls! Heck I'm a young man and I look up to those woman as role models! Gosh I loved the Golden Girls, I use to imagian I lived with them!

    2. Oh yes, the oldsters loved "Murder She Wrote." I do remember that. The "Golden Girls" were universally loved by people of all ages, that's for sure.

  12. I wag my finger at you, naughty Captain Reviewer Bersercules! Gawd, it's been at least 40 years since I had a tootsie roll. I assume they still make them? Next time I'm at 7-11, I'll check it out!

    1. To my knowledge they still make them. (same with RC cola)

  13. Wow, those are some seriously creepy superheroes! A guy building a club house in a vacant lot to hang out alone with children? Oh, that's just an after school special in the making!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yeah it is very disturbing, forget after school special, it would make a scary horror film!!

  14. I lol'd @ Seaman Reviewer. Bunch of those ads are really weird. Guess the 40s was a more innocent time with World War II and everything.

    1. Your probably right, when people are innocent they're often more niave and thats how worse stuff happens!

  15. I know for a fact that most of these superheroes don't have a sex drive. I talked this over with the Hernandez brothers because all Latinos know each other. Anyway, that makes it okay for them to spend so much time with children.

I loved the bit with you and your girlfriend. More of that, please.

Now I know why R.C. Cola and Grape Nuts are all over twitter today.

    1. You might be right about the no sex drive, I've watched lots of old Superman serials and TV shows and read lots of comics with him in it and I think he's a virgin. Heck I think most superheroes are sexless virgins. I just hope Captain Tootsie is one too!

I'd have more of my girlfriend in the videos but she don't like being in my videos much! Otherwise she'd appear in almost all of them!

  16. LOL this was your best review yet, I was in tears laughing at the poor fat kid "Fatso". Crammed in the corner, first in line to get the Tootsie rolls and sent to get the doctor who by the way thinks Tootsie rolls are FULL OF ENERRGGGYY. You know I think it worked though, I'm craving a tootsie roll now.

    1. Maybe if you start a fire Captain Tootsie will appear and put out the fire and then give you tootsie rolls!

      Glad you enjoyed the review!

  19. i ve always liked the sea monkeys ad. always wanted those. as for your outfit, it only needs goggles(beer goggles) and a cape and you're good to go.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Sea monkey ads always seemed cool, but I've heard the actual product was lame! Beer goggles, cap, AND wear my underware on the outside! Then I'd be set! Up up and I'm gone!

  22. its legit bro. i also cant believe how many of these bloggers are still blogging!

  23. I dunno, those ads are probably as good as some of the comics they're on.

    ... Tsk.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Really reminded me of the Cracked article on a similar kinds of ads.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Captain Reviewer, I like it! Its strong and exerts a kind of fearless dominance, without being totally cocky.

Dooooode, the 1940's was yonks ago! And the ads look like they came from yonks ago.

Funny how you reviewed the ads, not the actual comics!

    Rock on brudda!

  26. Hootin zoots, great review Berserc! I do not miss Tootsie Rolls. Such terrible, terrible candy. It looks great but then tastes exactly as it looks, like a little dog turd.
