Night Court

For those of you how don't know what Night Court is, be happy! you ain't missing much! It's a funny TV show from the 80's (and early 90's) about a bunch of odd characters working in a night court (oh so that's where the name comes from! I always wondered!).

The humour is wacky and silly, the characters extreme and unrealistic (imagine Ally McBeal giving birth to a litter of Gilligan's wacky kids and making them work at a night court... but sillier)!

So that's the show, now to a review of one of the episodes. Season three episode five: Halloween Too.

This one deals with Harry T. Stone (the night court judge) as he plans a Halloween party, as he makes his preparations for the party he meets a woman and they hit it off very quickly and the episode jumps ahead four days as their relationship is doing great and they are totally happy.

So obviously something bad is gonna happen. You don't make a character fall quickly in love and skip through the beginning of a relationship unless your gonna write out the character in the end of the episode!

And what is it that happens? Well Harry's girlfriend ends up in his court room for burning a bonfire on public property and dancing robustly in Central park. Oh and it turns out she is a witch. This of course bothers Harry a lot! No, not her committing a crime! her being a witch!

Crime good. Witch bad.

So shes a witch!? So what? What does that even mean? What does her being a witch mean in the Night Court reality? Is she a practitioner of the Wiccan faith? Does she wear all black and ride a broom? Does she have magic powers? They never really say! They just call her a "witch" and the term is never explained! Hell the characters don't even care what it means! or why she is one! They just hate the fact that she is one and want her to stop being one! Cause boy oh boy do they hate the term witch!... what ever that means.

They've done nothing to show that the term "witch" means anything evil! All they've done is throw the word around like it was the most heinous disgusting word imaginable (which lets face it! its not!) And these people are suppose to be rational educated people! Why is one word making them act this way! This is taking the term witch hunt to a new level of stupidity! Why are these highly educated people (who are also lawyers who seek truth and justice) this uninterested in learning the details and facts? and so hell bent on hate and discrimination?!

Holy hell! She can summon flame! Really? What the funk! So shes a real stereotype type witch? one with magical powers and all!?... Really?!... this is retarded!... but it still doesn't explain why they think shes evil!

And more importantly! this is suppose to be a funny TV show about a court room! Not a Sci-fi/fantasy show! What the hell is a magical witch doing in their reality?! Why does a TV show about a night court in New York city during the 80's that is based in reality contain magic and unexplained forces?!

This is stupid! Did they think magic and law were a perfect fit! (Why was Harry Potter not a night court judge?) Geepers! I Can't wait for the episode where Santa's Elves sue Santa for being an unsafe employer! And one where Gollum presses charges against Bilbo for theft! (How much do you think the one ring is worth? Is it theft over a thousand?)

So of course, cause American TV is that lame, Harry dumps the woman, cause she wont give up being a witch (what ever that implies) and cause he fears losing his job. (Seriously its an actually plot point! They all fear that if someone finds out shes a witch Harry will lose his job!) So they go there separate ways! A great relationship gone down the drain cause a "open minded" judge can't look past the term witch.

And just when this episode looked like it might be the worst episode of the show, the night court gang throws a costume party and the legal aid lawyer dresses up like a witch (to be funny? to rub it in Harry's face? for irony? or just to look slutty?) and she looks smoking hot in the costume!

So here's some pictures of that!

Yes, all three pictures look similar... it's the only time you see her in costume face on! and lets face it! in that outfit she looks best face on!

  7. I used to watch Night Court when I was little. I had a crush on the judge. It was campy fun and when I was little I didn't care how politically incorrect it was. I just cared that it made me giggle and the judge was dreamy.

I really hope more people comment witch based euphamisms.

I'd show her my eye of newt, if you know what I mean.

  9. I remember watching reruns of this show late at night when I was a little kid and couldn't sleep (and late at night probably only being like 11pm or something! ha).

  11. I remember that show! I even remember this episode! Bull was my favorite character...he was so goofy1

This show, as a kid and still to this day, has left me wondering...do they really have night court? Around my parts, the court house closes at 4pm and not a minute later. Don't ask me how I know this...I just know, okay?

  13. I had never watched this show. Now I am intrigued. Witch is bad? I want a night court case with J.K.Rowling as judge. crime is good ,witch is bad. Reminds me of recent episode of judge Gloria where she riled in favor of a person whose car was hit by a handicapped woman whose parking spot was stolen by this normal woman who had parked in handicapped parking and blocked the ramp as well.

  14. Don't think I've ever had the (mis)fortune of seeing this. Hell, at least it isn't Crossroads, with its wobbling sets and characters that disappear following a visit to the toilet!

  18. Haha there are LOTS of stupid episodes of Night Court. BUT I used to love watching it with my mom. What's the name of the bald guy? He always made me feel uncomfortable. I kind of wanted to start watching Night Court again a few years ago, but we only have season 3 at the library! Not 1 or 2 or anything after 3! I don't even know if there are more than 3 seasons. Do you remember the John Larroquette Show? I loved that, too.

  23. I do like that drawing of Gilligan giving that girl a spanking, that's funny. I've seen a few episodes of this somewhere in the past, but the only thing I remember about it, was that I didn't find it funny. And I like stupid-funny. I think it's the lead actor. There's something about him that just misses the mark.

  24. I remember Night Court and Cheers always being on back to back. I think Cheers was the better of the two.

  28. I used to watch this show just so I could see what girl Dan was gonna hook up with.
    Nice trip down memory lane.
